Westland "Wessex" ( born Westland Wessex ) is a multi-purpose British helicopter . Designed to ensure the accomplishment of the tasks of the Marine Corps, search and rescue operations and transportation of goods.

The Wessex HSS-1 helicopter, built in the USA on the basis of the S-58 helicopter, made its first flight on May 17, 1957 . The first flight of the Wessex HAS.1 helicopter manufactured in the UK No. XL727 took place on June 20, 1958. In April 1960, it began to be mass-produced.
The Westland company imported and modified one instance of the S-58 helicopter, first by installing an engine with a power of 820 kW / 1100 hp, and then on experimental and pre-production machines, an engine with a capacity of 1081 kW / 1450 hp The first production copy entered service with the Royal Navy of Great Britain on July 4, 1961 .
