Wound discharge

Wound discharge - products of the development of the wound process (the appearance and disappearance of a wound). At various stages of wound healing, the nature of the discharge is different.

Stages of the wound healing process

N. I. Pirogov on the basis of clinical signs identified three stages of the wound healing process:

  1. Edema.
  2. Wound cleansing (first 4-14 days).
  3. Stage granulation.

In the first phase, the discharge is a scanty excretion of mainly serous fluid with blood clots and fibrin deposits .

In the second phase, active autolysis of cells occurs, immunity mechanisms are activated, in addition to serous fluid, particles of necrotic tissues and conglomerates of dead leukocytes and bacteria also come from the wound. The fluid coming from the wound acquires a purulent character, periodically blood clots may appear in it due to purulent-necrotic melting of blood vessels.

In the third phase, the amount of discharge is sharply reduced, the wound is actually cleaned of dead tissue, microbial aggression is blocked. The discharge becomes again scarce, serous-hemorrhagic in nature.

Options for the composition of the wound

Also, various decomposition and vital products of various macro- and microorganisms can come from the wound. Depending on the localization of the process and the state of the immune system, the microflora prevailing in the wound discharge is distinguished.

The composition of the wound discharge can also include glands of external and internal secretion ; the composition of the discharge depends on which organs are affected by the wound.
