He studied at the University of California at Berkeley , in the early 1990s he moved to Russia, where in 1997 he founded the newspaper The eXile , becoming its editor in chief. Ames originally worked in Moscow for the Living Here newspaper, dedicated to the life of foreigners in Russia, and also wrote for the Moscow Times . In the same period, he met with the writer Eduard Limonov , who later became the author of The eXile . [one]
Ames criticizes some Western journalists who write about Russia: “90% of Western journalists have one task - to show the shortcomings of Russia so that at their home people look and feel better. Under Yeltsin , despite corruption and a low standard of living, foreign media did not focus on problems, since Yeltsin was a pro-Western president. And since Putin does not obey the West today, they want to show the consequences of his disobedience: they are looking for homeless people in Moscow and showing garbage dumps. If I had not lived in Moscow and read only the Economist , I would have thought that in Russia there are already GULAGs across the country. ” [2] Regarding CNN ’s coverage of the war in South Ossetia , Ames said: “I watched CNN. Full shit , continuous propaganda, even funny. ” [3]
