Vadim Fedorovich Shmelev ( April 7, 1926 - July 16, 2016 ) - Soviet glider pilot. He flew dozens of types of gliders and planes. It has a total flight time of 1110 hours, of which: 720 hours on gliders and 390 hours on airplanes.

For the first time in the world, he towed a Ts-25 landing glider to the North Pole region, where he found a way to combat glacier icing during flights in the Arctic.
Biography
Born in Irkutsk in the family of a military man . Until 1941, he studied in high school and graduated from 7 classes. In 1941, he was evacuated with his mother and sister from Moscow to Barnaul , where he entered the factory as a turner. In 1942, he quit the factory and entered the Barnaul Aero Club to study. After graduating from a flight training course there, he was left to work in an aero club as a glider instructor. At the same time he studied at an evening youth school, where he graduated from 9 classes.
In 1944 he was called up for military service and sent to the Berdsky school of pilots ADD . In connection with the dissolution of the school in 1946 he was sent to the combat unit. Until 1948 he served as a sergeant, then was sent to the Airborne Glider School of the Airborne Forces in the city of Pugachev , which he graduated in 1948 .
After graduating from college until 1954 he served in military unit 22529 in the city of Tula as a glider and link commander. In 1952, he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for the successful completion of a government mission.
In 1954 he was enrolled as a student of the Red Banner Air Force Academy in the village of Monino , which he graduated in 1957 . He was appointed to the post of squadron commander in military unit 22643 of the city of Pskov and served there until 1959 .
In 1959, the personnel department of the Central Committee of the USSR DOSAAF was offered the pilot further service in the Office of Aviation Training and Sports of the Central Committee of the USSR DOSAAF. From 1959 to 1971, V.F.Shmelev served in the Central Committee of the USSR DOSAAF as an inspector and senior inspector-pilot. Conducted community service as deputy chairman of the USSR Glider Sports Federation.
In 1971, due to health reasons, he was dismissed from flying work and dismissed from the personnel of the Soviet army in the military rank - lieutenant colonel .
He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner and eleven medals, an honorary badge of the USSR DOSAAF and many diplomas and certificates for the successful development of gliding in the USSR.
Since 1971, he was engaged in public work at the Central Aero Club of the USSR . As deputy chairman of the USSR Glider Sports Federation and judge of the All-Union category, he took practical part in organizing and conducting republican, all-Union and international aviation sports competitions . In 1977, V. F. Shmelev wrote and published a textbook on navigational training for glider athletes of DOSAAF “Gliding”.
He was retired, lived in the city of Moscow .
July 16, 2016 Vadim Fedorovich Shmelev died in the hospital.
