Gorilla agreement

The agreement on the conservation of gorillas and their range is an international treaty obliging its participants to conserve gorillas on its territory. [1] The agreement was concluded in October 2007 [2] under the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), also known as the “Bonn Convention”. The Agreement currently involves 10 states.

The agreement entered into force on June 1, 2008 .

Purpose of the Agreement

The general purpose of the Agreement is to serve as the basis for the conservation of gorillas and their ranges in the states parties to the Agreement and countries that have not yet joined it. According to the text of the Agreement, the participating States:

  • coordinate animal conservation measures within the scope of the Agreement
  • mark the boundaries of the range of gorillas and ensure the conservation, protection, maintenance and restoration of these areas
  • coordinate measures to create a network of suitable habitats
  • coordinate their activities aimed at combating poaching, as well as the adoption of specific measures to control poaching, especially in cross-border habitats.

Bodies of the Agreement

Council of the Parties

The Council of the Parties is the highest decision-making body of the Agreement and adopts Resolutions. Each country has one vote, non-participating in the Agreement of the state of the range have the opportunity to participate as observers.

The first Council of the Parties will be held in Rome, Italy, on November 29, 2008.

Secretariat

The Secretariat is the executive body of the Agreement. He coordinates and organizes the activities of the Council of the Parties and takes various actions to implement the goals set by the agreement, attract more participants and exchange information.

At the request of the Council of the Parties to the Gorilla Range Area, held in Paris, France, in October 2007, the Standing Committee of the Convention on Migratory Species obliged the Convention Secretariat to also act as the Secretariat of the Agreement for the Conservation of Gorillas and their ranges. The Convention Secretariat works closely with the GRASP Secretariat Human Monkey Conservation Project) for this purpose.

Scope of the Agreement

The geographic scope of the Agreement includes all the states on whose territory various species and subspecies of the gorilla live, namely Angola , Cameroon , Central African Republic , Democratic Republic of the Congo , Equatorial Guinea , Gabon , Nigeria , Rwanda and Uganda .

Parties to the Agreement

The following 5 states have signed the full agreement:

  •   CAR (October 26, 2007)
  •   Republic of the Congo (October 26, 2007)
  •   Nigeria (March 5, 2008)
  •   DR Congo (April 25, 2008)
  •   Rwanda (April 25, 2008)
