Goldmark's father, Leo Goldmark, an Austrian immigrant, was close to New York music circles, and Rubin was surrounded by music from childhood. He studied piano at Alfred von Livonius's College of New York (1846-1916), then in 1889 - 1891 at the Vienna Conservatory, with Robert Fuchs , Johann Nepomuk Fuchs and Anton Door , also privately studying with his uncle, then returned to New York and took lessons from pianist Rafael Josheffi , and upon arrival in the USA Antonin Dvořák became one of his first American students at the US National Conservatory .
Since 1895 , Goldmark taught at the College of Music in Colorado Springs . Here he wrote the symphonic poem "Hiawatha", based on the work of Henry Longfellow , successfully performed for the first time in 1900 in Boston . In 1905 he returned to New York, taught privately, gave concerts in the USA and Canada with concerts and lectures on music, wrote piano (dedicated to Yosheffi) and string quartets, piano trio, violin sonata, Negro rhapsody for orchestra. Since 1924 , he led the composition department at the Juilliard School .
Goldmark was one of the teachers through whom the transfer of creative experience from the European composer tradition to the young American one took place in the USA. Among his students were, in particular, George Gershwin , Aaron Copland , Alexei Khaev and other notable authors.
