Details
The author of the "Library" (the name "Mythological Library" is accepted in historical literature) is a work in three volumes, which is a large collection of traditional Greek mythology and heroic legends. The "library" today is one of the most important sources in Greek mythology. Only part of this work has been preserved, but not in the original, but rewritten for the library of Cardinal Vissarion in the 15th century. The work was first published in Rome in 1555 by Benedetto Edgio .
Apollodorus is mentioned in several places in the Library as its author. Nevertheless, a detailed analysis of the text showed that this Apollodorus (a name common in ancient Greece) could not be the famous grammar Apollodorus of Athens, in particular, because the Roman author Castor of Rhodes , a contemporary of Cicero , is quoted in the text. For this reason, the author of the text is called “Pseudo-Apollodorus,” since the science of him no longer has any data. .
