It was formed in the Krasnodar Territory on January 1, 1942 by order of the Supreme Command in the North Caucasian Military District . The formation took place on Cossack funds from the Kuban Cossacks - volunteers. For military services, on August 27, 1942, the honorary name "Guards" was given and renamed the 4th Guards . Tens of thousands of his soldiers were awarded orders and medals, later on the 22nd was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union .

Battle Path
As part of the North Caucasus Front, he participated in the Battle of the Caucasus , including the Armavir-Maykop defense operation, and the defense of distant approaches to Tuapse . Under the village of Kushchevskaya, he delayed the advance of the Nazi troops for several days, repeatedly delivering counterattacks on foot and on horseback , and he himself suffered significant losses.
