Heavy escort fighter ( TIS ) is an aircraft designed by N. N. Polikarpov Design Bureau . The materials of the conclusion to the preliminary design noted that the aircraft was intended as an escort fighter for bombers operating in a radius of 1000 km. Creation History
In 1940, on its own initiative, Design Bureau N. N. Polikarpova began designing a twin-engine twin-seat heavy fighter escort TIS (aircraft type "A"). During its creation, experience in the construction of MPI-1 , VIT-2 and SBP aircraft was taken into account. The journey from the drawing boards to the first departure was completed in less than one year. On November 29, 1940, the Order of the NKAP “On the Creation of a TIS Aircraft at Plant No. 51” was issued.
