History
The laying of the stone Sophia Cathedral began in 1681 , but construction began only in 1683 after the arrival of the artel of bricklayers, headed by Gerasim Sharypin and Ganka Tyutin. Moscow Ascension Cathedral was chosen as a model for construction. Construction continued from 1683 to 1686 . In 1684, the main dome of the cathedral collapsed during construction. Consecrated in October 1683 .
In 1920, the cathedral was closed, and a little later in 1922 all the cathedral treasures were confiscated. In the 1930s, the organization “Union-Bread” was housed in it and was used as a grain warehouse until the beginning of World War II [1] . After World War II, the building was empty and in 1961 it was transferred to the Tobolsk Museum-Reserve. In the 1980s, the restoration of the cathedral began.
Revival of the Cathedral
In 1989, by resolution of the Council for Religious Affairs under the Council of Ministers of the USSR, the cathedral building was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church . Soon after the transfer of the cathedral, repair and restoration work began. By 1994, the bulk of the repair work was completed, and on June 26, the cathedral was consecrated by the Most Holy Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexy II, in co-operation with archpastors and priests [1] . It is the cathedral of the Tobolsk-Tyumen diocese. It is also the main temple of the Tobolsk Orthodox Theological Seminary .
In 2004, the capital restoration of the Sofia-Assumption Cathedral began, which ended in 2012 . On All Saints' Memorial Day on June 22, 2014. The liturgy at the Sofia-Assumption Cathedral was performed by Patriarch Kirill , and Archimandrite Nikanor was consecrated there as bishop of the Yenisei and Lesosibirsk [2] .
