For thirteen years, Golenko sailed the Black Sea on ships carrying cargo and soldiers from Nikolayev and Sevastopol to the fortress of the Caucasian coast. In 1854, Golenko was appointed commander of the Kinburn transport and, with the opening of the Crimean campaign , from May 11 to September 12, 1854, he was in Sevastopol raid . From September 12 to October 22 of the same year, he commands the “Bug” transport. After the flooding of the Black Sea Fleet, Golenko assumed command of the 3rd bastion of the 3rd defensive line of Sevastopol and remained there for ten months, until August 28, 1855.

When repelling the storming of Sevastopol on October 24, 1854, Golenko was wounded in the right hand, but remained in the ranks; On October 28, he was contused again with a stone in the chest, but he did not leave the bastion; On December 9, he received a bullet wound to the leg, but after bandaging at the bastion, he did not leave his team. March 31, 1855 the enemy core inflicts the strongest concussion on both its legs, and the other core contusts Golenko to the head with the burning of the left side of the face, it is carried away from the bastion and evacuated to Simferopol . However, having only slightly recovered, on May 24, Golenko again returned to the ranks of the defenders of Sevastopol. On June 1, Golenko gets another heavy concussion to the head, his right eye is also damaged; nevertheless, after a two-week recovery on the steamer "Vladimir", he again finds himself in his bastion.

For distinction in the defense of Sevastopol Golenko December 6, 1854 awarded the Order of St.. Vladimir 4th degree with swords and May 11, 1855 he was awarded the Order of St.. Georgy 4th degree (№ 9602 on the list of Grigorovich - Stepanov).

In retribution of the feats of exemplary courage, rendered to them in the defense of the city of Sevastopol during the last ten-day bombing of this city.

11 months spent by Golenko under bombs and cannonballs in Sevastopol are credited to him, on the basis of the Highest Grace declared to the whole Sevastopol garrison, over 11 years of service in all its rights and advantages.

At the end of the Crimean War, Golenko switched to service in the merchant navy and in 1857–1860. made flights between the Crimea , the Caucasus , Constantinople and Alexandria in the rank of commander of the steamer "Tavrida".

After leaving in 1860, Golenko resigned on his estate in the Ostrovsky district of the Pskov province . On December 24, 1861, he was appointed peace mediator in Ostrovsky district. His service in this rank lasted for almost three three years, and only a reduction in the number of world sections in 1866 made Golenko resign that title; but in the same year he was elected an honorary magistrate .

On March 13, 1867, Golenko was promoted to captain of the 1st rank with dismissal from the naval service, with preservation of the right to wear the uniform and assignment of his pension, but his service as a justice of the peace continued, but no longer honorable. He remains in this position until 1870.

On January 6, 1872, Golenko was appointed the manager of Pavlovsk and the head of the Strelna manor. Subsequently, he was entrusted with the management and other estates of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich . In this post, Golenko first of all was preoccupied with freeing Pavlovsk from various remnants of the former serfs; so state-owned workshops remained in Pavlovsk: carpentry, plumbing, wallpaper, chimney and the like, all of which was replaced by free hired labor. A new staff for the management of Pavlovsk was also compiled and approved; on the basis of this state, all employees, upon retirement, received the right to have a more substantial amount of pensions for long service. Bookkeeping shortened and simplified, cash books were set up; significant improvements and innovations were made in the agronomic and agricultural part, and as a result, the income part of the estates increased significantly.

During the administration of Golenko to the farms of the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich, a compulsory redemption was made by the peasants of the Gdovsky and Fedorovsky estates of land plots and super-allotments; This ransom was made on very favorable terms to the peasants. In Pavlovsk, a new public theater and a new building of the Magnetic Observatory of the Academy of Sciences , extensive constructions of the Teacher's Seminary were built on new incomes.

Golenko died on April 27, 1884 in a train near Simferopol , accompanying Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich on a trip to the Crimea . He was buried in Yalta at the Livadia cemetery.
