Design History
At 11:00 a.m. on January 17, 1955, the world's first nuclear submarine USS Nautilus (SSN-571) first went to sea and aired a historic message: “Underway on nuclear power.”, Announcing about the beginning of the era of atomic submarines. Six months later, the creation of the first American nuclear submarine project, such as the Skate, began. In everything except the power plant, it was based on the Teng post-war diesel-electric submarine project , which, in turn, was created taking into account the results of World War II and with an emphasis on increasing the speed of the underwater course. Boats of the Skate type are one of the smallest combat nuclear submarines in the history of submarine shipbuilding, second only to the size of French Ryubi boats.
Construction History
Two boats were ordered on July 18, 1955 . The construction of the first boat was started on July 21 , the second boat and two more boats, ordered on September 29, 1955 , were laid in 1956 . In 1957-58, they were all launched, and since 1959 they were all in service. Construction was carried out by the Electric Boat (head boat), Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and Mare Island Naval Shipyard .
Representatives
In total, four ships were built. They were in service for more than 25 years and were decommissioned only in the late 1980s .
