“Under the canopy of girls in bloom” ( Fr. À l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs ) is the second book by Marcel Proust from the series “ In Search of Lost Time ”. It was first published in France at the end of 1918 [1] .

The novel "Under the canopy of girls in bloom" was greeted with criticism benevolently. The book was a success. On November 10, 1919, Marcel Proust was awarded the Goncourt Prize , and Proust’s book collected more votes than Roland Dorgelès’s pacifist novel Wooden Crosses ( fr. Les Croix de bois ) [2] .
From the history of the novel
Marcel Proust worked on the novel “Under the canopy of girls in bloom” for several years. The idea of the novel dates back to 1909 , when the first edition of the novel “ Towards Swan ” was created. In 1914, in the June issue of the magazine “ Nouvelle Revue Francaise ”, excerpts from “Under the shadow of girls in bloom” were printed - a description of the hero's first trip to Balbec. At the same time, the manuscript of the book was being prepared for collection from the publisher Grasse, who had published the first book of the writer a year before. During the First World War, Proust worked intensely on the text of the novel, thoroughly reworked, and in 1918 ( 1919 ) he managed to print a book from the publisher Gaston Gallimar . In 1920, the second edition of the novel, bearing traces of interference with the text: the disease (asthma), which intensifies with each passing year, forced Proust to give up editing proofs and to devote all his time and energy to writing the next volumes of the cycle [2] .
The novel was translated into Russian in 1924 by Adrian Frankovsky , in 1976 by Nikolai Lyubimov , in 2016 by Elena Bayevskaya .
