Regis Debray [1] ( fr. Régis Debray , born September 2, 1940, Paris ) is a French leftist philosopher and politician. Elisabeth Burgos's husband. Biography

Born in 1940 in Paris. In 1960 he entered the elite Higher Normal School . He studied under Louis Altusser . He graduated from the university in 1965, receiving a degree in philosophy. In 1965 he came to Cuba. Companion Ernesto Che Guevara .

In 1963-1964 Together with his future wife, Venezuelan Elisabeth Burgos , at the request of Fidel Castro , explores the sociopolitical situation in Bolivia . [2]

On April 20, 1967, he was arrested by the Bolivian authorities along with the Englishman George Roth and Argentinean Ciro Roberto Bustos . During interrogation, he stated that he was a journalist who visited a partisan detachment in order to interview Guevara . He was accused of illegally entering Bolivia , organizing an uprising, arson and murder, and sentenced to 30 years in prison. However, he spent only 4 years in prison, as a powerful international company was set up for his release, which was attended by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Paul Sartre , Andre Malrault , De Gaulle and Paul VI . Amnestied and released in December 1970.

After his release in 1971-1973. He lived in Chile , was close to President Allende . In 1973 he returned to France. He was engaged in journalistic, literary and political activities. He was close to Francois Mitterrand , who, after being elected President of France in 1981, appointed Debreu as his adviser on international affairs. In 1984-1985 - Secretary General of the Government Council for the South Pacific (Conseil du Pacifique Sud).

In 1985-1992. worked at the Council of France . He participated in the preparation of the French pavilion at the 1992 World Exhibition in Seville .

Having retired from public service in 1992, he was engaged in scientific and literary activities.

Since 1999 - Professor of Sociology at the University of Lyon .

In 2006 he was sent to Syria as the envoy of Jacques Chirac . Debre arrived in Damascus to meet with Islamic activist Salah Kaftaro, director of the Fondation Ahmad Kaftaro Foundation, an organization that supports several schools of Islamic jurisprudence and the study of the Koran . This visit became necessary in the conditions of aggravation of relations between France and Syria.
