IRIS-T

IRIS-T ( Eng. I nfra R ed Imaging S ystem T ail / T hrust V ector- C ontrolled ) - a close-range air-to-air missile equipped with a cooled infrared homing head . The development was led under the leadership of Germany by cooperation from 6 participating countries, as a transparent replacement for the AIM-9 Sidewinder . The design and layout of the IRIS-T is very close to the Japanese Type 04 AAM-5 .

History

In 1995, Germany announced the start of the development of a new rocket in cooperation with a number of countries. The development contract was awarded to Bodenseewerk GerΓ€tetechnik GmbH (BGT), which in 2004 merged with Diehl Munitionssysteme GmbH & Co. KG thus forming Diehl BGT Defense GmbH & Ko KG .

The first IRIS-T test launch was conducted in October 2000 with the F-16 of the Greek Air Force . In March 2002, firing tests were carried out from the F-4 Phantom II with the successful defeat of a target UAV near the island of Sardinia .

On December 5, 2005, the Luftwaffe received the first batch of missiles, which should become the main melee missile of the German Air Force fighters.

The IRIS-T missile uses the TELL infrared homing head. The homing head is covered with a transparent fairing . The refrigerants are located in the starting device of the carrier. IRIS-T has fixed destabilizers , four wings and elevators. Each steering wheel is equipped with its own electric drive . [one]

IDAS Underwater Launch and Barracuda Underwater Launch at TechDemo'08, 2008

IDAS ( Eng.Interactive Defense and Attack S ystem for Submarines ) is a marine version of the missile, designed to arm the submarines of Project 212A of the German Navy . IDAS is intended to be used to fire airborne assault forces, small and medium surface ships, or targets on the coastal strip.

The flight range is about 20 km [2] . At the same time, the rocket starts from the bow launchers of the submarines, moves for a while in the underwater position, which prevents the submarine from being unmasked, and after reaching the surface flies through the air [2] .

The missile is equipped with an infrared seeker [2] .

The length of the rocket is 2.5 m, the caliber is 240 mm, the diameter is 180 mm, the launch weight is 120 kg [2] .

IRIS-T SL

IRIS-T SL ( Eng. IRIS-T S urface L aunch ) - An IRIS-T variant adapted for ground launch conditions, it is supposed to be used as an addition to the American PAC-3 missiles of the MEADS missile defense system . First tested at the end of 2009 at the Overberg training ground in South Africa .
