Pace (chess)

Pace

  1. Rhythm of the game (development of events); it can be slow (mainly in a positional game) or fast (in a combination game).
  2. In a narrower sense - a move. In this sense, the pace can be won, that is, you can beat the opponent in development by one move, or you can lose - to occupy the desired field with a pawn or piece not in 1, but in 2 moves. Loss of pace is especially dangerous in open openings (positions) and in the endgame . Modern theory permits a loss of tempo if it is due to the peculiarities of the position, for example, in the opening one can make several moves with the same figure to disprove the opponent's game. In the endgame, the tempo becomes crucial. Sometimes the only way to achieve a goal is to win or lose a pace.
  • Winning pace - compared with other developments, ahead of the opponent in the implementation of a plan for 1 or more moves.
  • Losing (losing) tempo - transferring the turn queue to an opponent (compared to the current position or with other developments).
