Building
The museum building was designed by American-Canadian architect Frank Gehry and was opened to the public in 1997 . The building is immediately recognized as one of the most spectacular buildings in the world in the style of deconstruction . Architect Philip Johnson called it "the greatest building of our time" [2] .
Located on the embankment building embodies the abstract idea of a futuristic ship, perhaps for interplanetary travel [3] [4] . It is also compared to a bird, a plane, an artichoke and a blooming rose [5] .
The central atrium, 55 meters high, resembles a giant metallic flower, from which the petals of curving fluid lengths diverge, in which the enfilade of exhibition halls for various exposures are located [6] .
Like most works of Gehry, the structure consists of soft contours. Frank Gehry argued in an interview that "the irregularity of bends is designed to capture light." When designing the building in full force, the capabilities of CATIA computer aided design were used [7] .
The building is lined with titanium sheets with a total area of 24 thousand m².
Exhibitions
The museum holds thematic exhibitions, for example, on the subject of Chinese culture and fine arts of Russia (from March 28 to September 3, 2006) [8] .
The permanent exhibitions of the museum are devoted to the art of the 20th century - installations and electronic works exceed the number of traditional paintings and sculptures. The central work of the collection is a series of sculptures The Essence of Time , made of weathering steel by sculptor Richard Serra and placed in the gallery of Arcelor [9] .
Most of the collection consists of avant-garde works and abstractions .
