About the album
The album is called the same as the Bret Easton Ellis novel American Psycho , [6] although it was originally called Dead Kings Rise . This album was produced by Daniel Ray [2] (who produced such musicians as Ramones and Rob Zombie ) and mixed by Andy Wallace [2] ( Slayer , Nirvana , RAtM , Jeff Buckley ).
According to Jerry Onley, at first the group was really determined to write material a la Danzig - aggressive short three-chord action films; However, the new vocalist, Michael Graves , did not fit into this format, with the result that the group gradually acquired a new sound [5] . Graves co-wrote a number of songs [7] ; the texts “ Dig Up Her Bones ” and “The Haunting” were written by him long before joining the group [4] .
The instrumental "Abominable Dr. Phibes" is taken from the beginning of the song "Dr. Phibes Rises Again ”(based on the 1972 horror film of the same name and written by Only and Doyle during the Kryst the Conqueror period) [6] . “Hate the Living, Love the Dead” is based on the 1935 film “ The Bride of Frankenstein ”, “This Island Earth” - on the sci-fi film “ This Island Earth ”, “Walk Among Us” - on the sequel of the film “ Revenge of the Creature ”, "Shining" - on the " Poltergeist " of 1982; “Mars Attacks” was written by Onli specifically for Tim Burton ’s upcoming movie “ Mars Attacks! , However, Burton received a copy of the record too late. [6]
The work on the album took 6 months [5] . The songs “American Psycho” and “Dig Up Her Bones” were recorded on video clips. The album (for the first time in the history of The Misfits) was marked by hit in the chart The Billboard 200 (line 117) [8] .
“According to our punk roots, the longest song on the album is 3 minutes, and nine tracks are under two. We have the same classic backing vocals, a sequence of chords in the spirit of the 50s, a different beat speed - but our sound is an order of magnitude better than what was possible when we first started. ”
- Jerry Only [9]
Critic reviews
Entertainment Weekly : “Their stupid lyrics inspired by bad horror movies, opium voice and explosive hardcore are still excellent for concert scuffles . And the new vocalist Michael Graves is an exact copy of Glenn Danzig , before he became a heavy metal performer ” [3] . The reviewer of the Russian edition of the Classic Rock magazine also gave the album a high rating [10] . The PopMatters reviewer, among other things, noted the level of Doyle's play, which has increased significantly since the last album of the group (“barely coping with the two-dotted solo in“ We are 138 ””) [4] .
