Biography
Rene Depest was born on August 29, 1926 in Jacmel ( Haiti ).
He published his first poems in 1945 in the Iskra collection. For political activity he was imprisoned, later was forced to leave his native country and go to France, and then to Cuba , where he lived in exile from the Duvalier regime. He continues to write poetry and in 1956 publishes Black Ore, a work condemning oppression and slavery.
In 1988, his novel “Hadriana dans tous mes rêves” won the Renodo Prize , the Society of Writers Award and the Royal Academy of French Language and Literature of Belgium. In April 2007, the Dept. became the laureate of the Robert Ganzo Prize for the book of poems La rage de vivre. He is a special envoy of UNESCO in Haiti.
