Located in the very north of Italy, northwest of Milan , near the Swiss border, a few kilometers from Lake Varese .

Content
History
Known since 922 years. In the Middle Ages, the fate of Varese was closely intertwined with the policies of the Republic of Genoa . In the XI-XII centuries, this area of Insubria was the possession of the Counts of Lavagna , from which the Fieschi and Pinelli families competing with each other. In 1386, Varese bought the Genoese ruler Antoniotto Adorno from the Fieski clan. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the rulers of Varese belonged to the Laudi family.
In 1766, Empress Maria Theresia transferred the city to the lifetime possession of Francesco III d'Este . In the Battle of Varez in 1859, Garibaldi defeated the Hapsburgs . At the end of Risorgimento, the city became, as P. Muratov put it , “a favorite summer holiday destination for secular Italy”; he was heavily rebuilt under Mussolini .
Attractions
Among the buildings of remarkable architecture are the Basilica of San Vittore (1580-1615) with the Baroque bell tower and the paintings of Lombard artists of the time and the palace-villa Francesco d'Este with a picturesque park (1766-1772). Under the protection of UNESCO, there are mountain chapels of the 17th century in the vicinity of Varese, attracting many Catholic pilgrims to them .
