At the heart of the organization's zooprotection principles lies the conviction that animals have rights and deserve that their main interests be taken into account, regardless of whether they bring benefits to people. According to the supporters of the organization, animals are able to suffer. Therefore, people are not allowed to use animals for food, clothing, entertainment, experiments and any other purposes [1] .

PETA was founded by Alex Pacheco and Ingrid Newkirk in 1980 as a non-profit organization. The organization’s main office is located in Norfolk , Virginia, in the United States , and has other offices in the United Kingdom , Germany , the Netherlands , India, and the Asia-Pacific region [2] .

According to the newspaper The Washington Post , the number of supporters of the organization for the year 2004 was 800 thousand [3] . The organization is criticized for carrying out systematic massacres of animals (sometimes stolen and in violation of the laws) and for the fact that it pays more attention to advertising, and not to working with animals [4] [5] [6] .

Work Directions

PETA pays special attention to four main areas of treating people with animals: industrial agriculture , animal testing and testing, the clothing market (using fur, leather, wool, down), animals in the entertainment industry. Attention is also paid to a wide range of possible violations of animal rights, including fisheries , bullfighting and cockfighting. PETA carries out its work by disseminating information, investigating cases of cruelty to animals, doing scientific research, saving animals, supporting legislative measures, engaging celebrities and holding special events and protests.

The organization is engaged in the sterilization of pets. It also operates a shelter for animals, but only a very small proportion (1-3%) of animals from it finds new owners, while most of the animals are put to sleep shortly after admission [7] . For example, according to documents published by Center for Consumer Freedom in 2012, for 15 years since 1998, about 27 thousand animals were killed at PETA headquarters in Norfolk, which accounted for about 95% of all animals that came to this shelter. 84% of animals were euthanized during the day after receiving [4] . Amanda Schinke, a representative of the organization, states that euthanasia is a manifestation of love for those animals that no one else loves, and believes that a painless end to their existence is better than cruel treatment to them [6] . She believes that PETA shelters do everything in their power to help animals, and points out that in total in the US, about 4 million domestic animals are sheltered every year (2008 data) [8] .

Organization Criticism

Many actions of the organization are met with fierce criticism, including among animal advocates. So, when PETA blamed the stingray Steve Irwin of animal harassment , many people opposed the organization. [9] A similar reaction followed the charge of the cartoon “ Toy Story 4 ” in promoting animal cruelty. [ten]

The actions and activities of PETA activists were the subject of close attention by the counterterrorism department of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2005 [11] .

In April 2008, PETA announced the establishment of a $ 1 million prize for a company or a team of scientists, which by June 30, 2012 will develop a method for making chicken meat in a test tube that will not differ in appearance and taste from the present, and will begin selling it in ten states of the United States [12] [13] [14] [15] .
