Geography
The city is located off the Adriatic coast, 150 km southeast of Rome . Located in the northern part of the Abruzzo region, in a hilly area at the lower reaches of the highest peak of the Apennines . This is one of the few cities where only half an hour from the city center there are both snow-capped peaks 3000 meters high and the sunny beaches of the Adriatic Sea . Teramo is the confluence of the Tordino River and the Vezzola Stream, which surround its historic center.
Etymology
The city was called Petrut ( Italian: Petrut ) by the Phoenicians, which means "a high place surrounded by waters." During Latinization, the name changed to Praetut ( Italian Praetut ), later to Praetutium ( Italian Praetutium ) and Ager Praetutianus ( Italian Ager Praetutianus ) to denote the territory. The ancient Romans called the city Interamnia Urbs ("city between the rivers", referring to the Tordino ( Italian. Tordino ) and Vezzola ( Italian. Vezzola )). In the Middle Ages, the city changed its name from Praetutium ( Italian: Praetutium )) to Aprutium ( Italian: Aprutium )) and under this name first appears in some texts of the VI century. Until the XII century, this name denoted both the city itself and the territory surrounding it, in addition from this ancient name of the city comes the name of the entire region: Abruzzo .
Subsequently, the name Interamnia turned into Interamn, Teramn, Interamnium, Teramnium and finally in Teramum ( Italian: Teramum )).

In antiquity, the city was the center of the pretzu population (the ancient Italian people who settled in central Italy in the 1st millennium BC). In 290 BC e. was conquered by the Roman consul Mania Curius Dentatus and became a municipality.
