16 teams took part in the men's soccer tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics . Special Olympic teams participated, consisting of 18 players, of which 15 should be born later than January 1, 1985 , and there should also be at least two goalkeepers. Competitions were held from August 7 to 23 , and they began the day before the official opening of the Games. For the first time, Côte d'Ivoire , New Zealand and Serbia took part.
