Biography
Andreas Schimper is the son of the German botanist William Philip Schimper . He studied natural sciences at the University of Strasbourg , was an assistant at the Botanical Garden in Lyon , a professor at the University of Baltimore , an extraordinary professor at the University of Bonn , and since 1899 an ordinary professor and director of the Botanical Garden in the city of Basel [5] .
He made numerous trips to tropical countries, took part in the German deep-sea expedition of 1898. He was engaged in anatomy, physiology, systematics, biology and geography of plants. In such opposite areas as the structure of protein crystals, starch and chlorophyll grains, he made the most important studies. The starch-forming agents were discovered by a chimpter, the relationships between starch and chlorophyll grains and their structure were studied, and it was shown, in contrast to the Hegeli’s views, that starch grains grow through superposition of layers [5] .
Chimper is one of the best experts on the tropical vegetation of his time, and in this area he has written many works and published Botanische Mittheilungen aus den Tropen (Jena). Possessing equally good methods of descriptive and physiological botany, he wrote the capital work “Pflanzengeographie auf physiolog. Grundlage ”(Jena, 1890) - the experience of plant geography on physiological principles [5] .
Reading pharmacognosy in Bonn, he published a number of reference books on this subject. In the famous textbook of botany of Strasbourg, Noll, Schenck and Shimper, he wrote the department of flowering plants [5] .
