Event

Poti is one of the main Georgian ports on the Black Sea . During the five-day war , the city became a place of armed conflict. On August 9, Russian Air Force aircraft attacked Poti [1] . In the evening of the same day, the mayor of the city, Vano Saginadze, reported that the Georgian Navy repulsed the attack of Russian planes when they went in for bombardment from the sea [2] . On August 11, Russian troops entered Zugdidi without a fight, then into Senaki and Poti "in order to prevent the regrouping of Georgian forces and the concentration of additional armed forces" [3] .

On the night of August 12, Russian ships in the Poti area were attacked by Georgian boats, after which the Russian military entered the port, who blew up two missile boats of the Georgian Navy and three ships of the Georgian coast guard on the roads [3] . Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, in turn, said: “The Russian military wanted to destroy three Georgian ships with an air strike right in the port of Poti. However, at the request of the Georgian side, in order to avoid great damage, the Russian military launched ships at sea and blew them up there ” [4] . According to UNOSAT satellite images, 6 boats were flooded at Poti's berths; no other damage or destruction was found in satellite images [5] .

Information about the victims in Poti during the August events was not reported.
