He graduated from Kyoto University , a specialist in Italian literature . He worked as an editor, journalist, factory manager.

The first sci-fi publication is the novel “Peace to the Earth” ( ( п 地 に は 平和 を и Ti niva haiva o ) , 1961, Russian translation, 1967). According to the literary critic Yevgeny Kharitonov , later Komatsu began to create "soundly executed, but frankly commercial bestsellers." At the same time, the plots of his works skillfully combined “a win-win storyline with problematicity and social focus, elegant style.” True, from novel to novel, the characters of Komatsu novels began to lose their psychological integrity, and increasingly began to resemble monotonous functions [7] .

A number of Komatsu novels, including The Death of the Dragon (1973) and Goodbye, Jupiter (1982), were filmed.
