Origin
The history of the American Cocker Spaniel is rich in a wide variety of events. This breed is of American origin. And although there is no officially confirmed data on this subject, presumably this breed was bred in 1880. Quite quickly, it became widespread around the world, as it interested many dog breeders, thanks to which, as soon as possible, it was recognized by the leading dog clubs. Of course, modern cocker spaniels are significantly different from the first representatives of this breed, but still they have a lot in common.
Appearance
- Type and color of wool
This breed has a soft, maintenance-free, long coat on the sides and legs, also a very similar coat on the ears, a tough and darker coat on the back. Color can be both monophonic and multicolor. Often there is a tan. The main colors of wool are fawn, brown (chocolate) and black.
- Height and weight
Height up to 37-39 cm, depending on gender. The American Cocker Spaniel breed standard does not define weight; only English spaniels have strict weight limits.
- Body type
The physique is strong, movements are free, the back does not bend.
- Ears, Tail, Limbs
Normally, the edge of the ear (the ear itself, and not the hair on it) should precisely reach the tip of the nose. The tail docking requirement for the show standard has been canceled. The hair on the ears, tail, limbs is soft. The nose is black or brown.
Character
American Cocker Spaniels are distinguished by a lively mind and quick wits. These are very mobile and active dogs, constantly finding all kinds of entertainment for themselves. A state of rest is alien to them; they are naturally curious. Thanks to their curiosity, they lend themselves perfectly to training and perceive the learning process as a kind of fun game. Loyal to their master, ready for self-sacrifice. Friendly and affectionate, get along well with children, even with small ones. These dogs are also very fond of eating, so you need to follow the standard portions of their diet, because it is difficult to resist their pleading eyes.
Care
It is quite difficult to take care of the American Cocker Spaniel, as he is the owner of a thick and long coat, which must always be kept in good condition, especially if the pet is a frequent exhibitor. You can bathe such dogs no more than once a week, and you also need to use special shampoos so as not to harm the pet's hair. It is necessary to comb regularly, especially before washing and after washing, so that the coat does not lose its silkiness and does not become tangled. When walking with a dog, you need to observe exactly where your pet is walking, since the cocker brings sand to the house on its feet, and its coat collects all burdocks, which are very difficult to remove. Also, every fifth cocker in the world has problems with ears and paws. If the ears or paws are often wet (for example, when the paws are poorly wiped after a walk, or when the dog drinks from the drinker and the ears get wet), then a fungus can grow in them that is not easy to remove.
