Taltal ( Spanish: Quebrada Taltal ) is a temporary watercourse [1] in northern Chile in the Antofagasta region. In the upper reaches it has the name Chaco ( Spanish: Río Chaco ). The area of the drained territory is 5853 km² [1] . The river flows westward and flows into the Pacific Ocean in the city of Taltal .

Description
The basin of the watercourse lies between the parallels 25º03 'and 25º39' and the meridians 69º00 'and 70º30', in the north it borders with the basins of the temporary streams of Santa Lucia and San Ramon , in the south it is Sifuncho , La Caccina and the northern part of the Pan de Asucar basin , in the east - with the salt marshes of Punta Negra , Pachonales and Agua Amarga [1] .
Surface water in the Taltal valley is absent, with the exception of springs at the tops of tributary ravines [1] .
Periodically, water-mud currents occur in the riverbed caused by rains in the foothills of the Andes . Water consumption in such cases can reach 200 m 3 / s [2] .
Etymology
According to existing versions, the name comes either from the Mapucian thalthal 'bird' (due to the abundance of gulls), or of a local, Atakamian origin with the meaning 'descent' [3] .
Economic Development
Copper ores are common in the Taltal basin, for the extraction of which the now inactive mines were built [1] . At the mouth is the city of Taltal .
Flora
The vegetation is poor due to the arid climate. Only in the Pacific coastal zone, where moisture is brought in by fogs, does a significant number of succulent species of the genera Cereus , Opuntia , Eulychnia , Kislitsa , Adesmia , Calandrinia, and Cristaria grow [1] .
