The square has been known since the 19th century . In 1860, the market for wearable items was opened on it, which later became known as the Jewish Bazaar (Evbaz) or the Galician Bazaar.
The square in 1869 was called Galitsky (from here the road began to the West - to Galicia ). At the same time, the so-called Iron Church (made of cast-iron plates) of St. John Chrysostom (destroyed in the 1930s, now the circus building on this site) was built on Galitskaya Square.
The modern name of the square is from 1952 . In the 1960-1970s, the reconstruction of the square was carried out. In 1981-1982, another reconstruction was carried out, an obelisk was erected to the Hero City (height 43 m). An underground passage was constructed between the Ukraina department store and the circus .
