Greater Helsinki ( Fin. Suur-Helsinki , Swede. Storhelsingfors ), or the Helsinki region ( Fin. Helsingin seutu , Swede. Helsingforsregionen ), as well as the smaller metropolitan area ( Fin. Pääkaupunkiseutu , Swede. Huvudstadsregionen ) - names that indicate different regions sizes around Helsinki - the capital of Finland [1] .
They are located in the southern part of the country, along the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea . The smaller metropolitan region includes the cities of Helsinki , Espoo , Vantaa and Kauniainen with a total population of 1,020,166 people (as of December 31, 2008) [2] . The region is the center of the country's economy, culture and science. Eight of Finland’s 20 universities , as well as most of the headquarters of companies and government agencies, are located in Greater Helsinki, in addition, there is the country's main aviation hub - Helsinki-Vantaa Airport .
In 2014, a group of experts came up with a proposal to create a single metropolis from the cities of Helsinki, Vantaa, Espoo and Kauniainen along with Sipoo and the southern part of the city of Tuusula [3] .
Terminology
Most accurately, the Capital Region consists of 4 municipalities with city status: Helsinki , Vantaa , Espoo and Kauniainen .
Another 8 municipalities are usually included in Greater Helsinki, these are Vihti , Kerava , Kirkkonummi , Nurmijärvi , Sipoo , Tuusula , Hyvinkää and Järvenpää . In this case, the total number of residents increases to 1,295,955 people (December 31, 2008). Sipoo is part of East Uusimaa , and all the rest are in Uusimaa .
As of December 31, 2007, the Finnish Statistical Agency identified as “the suburban Helsinki belt” (that is, the area where many residents work in a larger city; Finnish. Helsingin työssäkäyntialue , Swedish. Helsingfors pendlingsområde ) 24 municipalities with a total area of 7 359.8 km² and 1,431,108 inhabitants [4] .
