In 2008, the car underwent a small facelift, which brought changes to its appearance. Two years later, production was completed, and the C219 was replaced in 2011 by the Mercedes-Benz C218 model.

History

The prototype of the future Mercedes-Benz C219 was presented in 2003 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and was called the Mercedes-Benz Vision CLS [1] . Patents for car design were filed July 24, 2002 [2] . Konkontspt was built on the basis of W211 ( E-class ).

In 2004, the CLS 500 model debuted at an auto show in New York and Bologna . Serial production of the C219 began in 2004 at factories in Sindelfingen , Germany . The lineup consisted of two six-cylinder models and two eight-cylinder ones. The first group included the diesel CLS 320 CDI and gasoline CLS 350. The flagship series was determined by the usual CLS 500 and CLS 55 AMG (presented at the Paris Motor Show in 2004), built by a subsidiary tuner Mercedes-AMG . The model entered the US market only in 2005.

In 2006, three engines were replaced immediately. A new generation engine with direct fuel injection was installed on a gasoline V6 , and the car was named CLS 350 CGI ( Stratified - C harged G asoline Injection ) [3] . The CLS 320 BlueTEC version has appeared . M113 engines were replaced by M273 for the CLS 500 (the model became known as CLS 550 for export to the USA ) and M275 for the new flagship CLS 63 AMG. In 2008, the car underwent a very small modernization, the input of which changed the appearance of the grille, LED taillights, other rear-view mirrors with LED repeaters "turn signals", as well as new design wheels and other exhaust pipes [4] . At the same time, the model range was replenished with another model with V6 - CLS 280 [5] . In 2009, the latest changes were made, which affected only the names: the diesel CLS 320 CDI received the designation CLS 350 CDI, and the gasoline CLS 280 - CLS 300. However, neither the engines nor their performance did not change.

On July 27, 2010, the last C219 model car rolled off the assembly line of Mercedes-Benz Sindelfingen . The last was a black car equipped with a 5.5-liter eight-cylinder gasoline engine and designed for the American market. Since the appearance of the Mercedes-Benz CLS on the conveyor (October 2004), about 170,000 such cars were assembled at this enterprise [6] .

The second generation of the CLS-class appeared in 2011 on the basis of the concept car F800 Style [7] .

Description

Exterior

C219 after restyling

The door handles and side mirrors of the 5-meter C219 are finished in chrome. Alloy wheels with R18 — R19 tires are installed on all car models [8] .

The body is painted in a new special paint that is resistant to scratches [9] . Mercedes-Benz provides a 30-year corrosion protection guarantee - all body parts made of sheet metal are electrolytically galvanized. In addition to this, the body is covered with organic paint containing zinc pigments (2 to 4 micrometers thick) [9] .

As standard, all C219 models are equipped with halogen bulbs (H7) that provide bright dipped beam from clear plastic lenses. Headlights based on the latest technology take up less space than conventional reflector systems and also generate a powerful beam of light. If desired, a bi-xenon lighting system can be installed. In both versions, the “Headlamp Assist” function is included in the standard equipment of the C219, which automatically turns the headlights on and off when the car enters a tunnel or underground parking (provided that the rotary light switch is in the “Auto” position) [9] .

The drag coefficient Cd is 0.30 for the CLS 350 and 0.31 for the CLS 500 [9] .

Interior

The interior of the C219 is available in four colors, three types of leather and two types of wood [10] . The leather interior, which varies in color between black, gray basalt, red sunset and cashmere, comes with nappa leather upholstery for Designo models. The interior finish made of laurel wood and walnut burl is available either in a glossy or matte silk finish (an eye maple has been available since 2006) [11] .

The seats can optionally be equipped with a ventilation system. The distance between them is 829 mm [11] . The speaker system consists of 10 speakers creating surround sound. A CD changer can be installed on request.

The trunk lid opens and closes at the touch of a button on the electronic ignition key or with a switch on the inside of the driver's door [9] .

Engines

The 2004-2006 C219 range consisted of CLS 350 engines (3.5 liter V6 M272 , 200 kW / 272 hp, 350 Nm ), CLS 500 (5.0 liter V8 M113 , 225 kW / 306 hp ., 460 Nm ), CLS 550 (5.5 liters V8 M273 , 281 kW / 388 hp, 530 Nm ) and CLS 55 AMG (5.4 liters V8 M113 , 350 kW / 476 hp , 700 Nm ) [12] . In 2006, the CLS 350 CGI engine (3.5 liter V6 M272 , 215 kW / 292 hp, 365 Nm ) appeared, and the CLS 55 AMG was replaced by the CLS 63 AMG (6.2 liter AMG M156 V8 , 378 kW / 514 hp, 630 Nm ) [13] . Since 2007, the CLS 280/300 (3.0 liter V6 M272 , 170 kW / 231 hp, 300 N · m ) [14] and the updated CLS 500 (5.5 liter V8 M273 , 285 kW / 388 hp) are available ., 530 Nm ) [15] .

The diesel engine range was presented by CLS 320 CDI engines (since 2004, 3.0 liters turbocharged V6 , 165 kW / 224 hp, 540 Nm ) and CLS 350 CDI (since 2007, 3.0 liters turbocharged V6 , 165 kW / 224 hp, 540 Nm ) [15] .

The maximum speed of all engines except CLS 280/300 was 250 km / h. The least powerful engines had a limit of 245 km / h [14] .

The head of passengers and the driver is protected by special head restraints. The car is equipped with a “smart” sensor system for seat belts and airbags. Optionally, the PRE-SAFE collision avoidance system [18] can be installed. The standard for all CLS-class models are window airbags installed both in front and in the rear of the car. Like the company's previous models, the C219 is equipped with an ABS and ESP system [18] .

47.5% of all components of the car body are made of high-strength steel alloys that provide maximum protection despite the small thickness of the materials [18] . The front module consists mainly of a solid cross member, which is not only used to fasten the bumper, but also performs an important function during frontal shock displacement, diverting forces to the unaffected side of the vehicle and thereby significantly helping to dissipate impact energy [9] . The foam shock absorber in the plastic bumper is made of energy-absorbing polypropylene , which is deformed during a collision and absorbs all impact energy, as a result of which the downstream metal elements are not damaged. After the plastic automatically returns to its original form [9] .

AMG Version

CLS 55 AMG

The Mercedes-AMG division created two versions of the car: the first, CLS 55 AMG, came out with the model in 2004 and was equipped with 5439 cm 3 of the M113 supercharging engine with a power of 350 kW at 6100 rpm [19] . Acceleration to 100 was 4.7 seconds. The maximum speed was 250 km / h.

Like all cars manufactured by Mercedes-AMG , the CLS 55 AMG was equipped with a 5-speed automatic transmission AMG Speedshift with manual control [19] . The power unit was perfectly complemented by a sports semi-active independent suspension ( AIRMATIC DC ) and a high-performance braking system. The wheels (R18 alloy wheels) are equipped with large, ventilated and perforated brake discs.

The interior of the car included high-quality leather nappa and Alcantara trim, chrome sills with the AMG logo and speedometer up to 320 km / h [19] .

CLS 63 AMG

In 2006, the CLS 55 AMG was replaced by the CLS 63 AMG with 6208 cm 3 , on which the M156 engine with 514 hp was installed. (375 kW ) at 6800 rpm and a seven-speed automatic transmission 7G-Tronic [20] . The car was presented at the Geneva Motor Show . The CLS 63 AMG accelerated from standstill to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds, and the maximum speed was 250 km / h (electronically limited). The new AMG V8 engine provided from 500 N · m of torque at 2000 rpm to 630 N · m at 5200 rpm [20] .

The car was equipped with new, high-quality, ventilated perforated disc brakes on the front wheels. In addition to this, titanium-colored 18-inch AMG alloy wheels feature 255/40 wide and 285/35 wide tires. On the front fenders, the 6.3 AMG nameplates were added [20] .

The interior of the car was a combination of sports style, high quality materials and quality finishes. The CLS AMG comes standard with sports seats upholstered in nappa leather, a 320 km / h speedometer, and an ergonomic and sporty steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles. The dashboard received the new RACETIMER function, which allows the driver to record lap times (speed and other indicators) of a lap on private racing tracks [20] .

This version of the CLS 63 AMG was released until the end of production in 2010.
