History
On the basis of the order of the Commander-in-Chief of the South-Western direction No. 00274 / op of April 17, 1942, for "more massive use of tanks", by order of the troops of the Southern Front No. 00156 in the Voroshilovgrad region, the 24th Panzer Corps (USSR) was formed.
The 24th Panzer Corps, after the heavy fighting in May on the Southern Front, consisting of the 4th Guards Panzer, 2nd, 54th Panzer and 24th Motorized Rifle Brigades, was in the reserve of the Supreme High Command almost until November 1942, restoring combat readiness.
By directive of the Supreme High Command No. 170465 of June 28, 1942, the corps from the South-Western Front is subordinated to the Bryansk Front .
In December 1942 , when the fate of the encircled German group Paulus was decided near Stalingrad , the corps in the Middle Don operation (Operation Small Saturn ), having overcome about 240 kilometers with battles in five days, defeated the supply base, garrison and large airfield in the enemy rear , which provided the encircled group of German troops (86 German aircraft were destroyed at the same time), cut the railway to Stalingrad and on December 24, 1942 took control of the railway station and the village of Tatsin , Rostov Region . The enemy, having transferred two armored and two infantry divisions to Tatsinskaya, tried to encircle and destroy the corps. After a 4-day battle, the corps left the encirclement. According to published memoirs of the chief of staff of the 48th Panzer Corps F. Mellentin , the 24th Panzer Corps was surrounded by the 11th Panzer Division of the Wehrmacht and completely destroyed. [1] This information is refuted by the military journal of the South-Western Front, according to which already on January 1, 1943, the corps cut the Skasyrskaya - Zakharo-Oblivsky road. [2] In addition to causing losses to the German group in Tatsinskaya, tankers destroyed the enemy garrisons in the surrounding villages and villages. According to the recollection of an eyewitness A. I. Gorbachev, who lived in a farm in Nadezhivka in the Tatsinsky district , several T-34 tanks broke into their farm at high speed during the day and started firing Romanian soldiers rushing along the streets from machine guns, crushed a food truck and a wounded Romanian soldier and drove through Further. Most likely, these events took place on December 30, 1942, when the remains of the corps with battles broke through back to Ilyinka . By order of the USSR NCO No. 412 of December 26, 1942, the 24th Panzer Corps for combat merit was transformed into the 2nd Guards Panzer Corps with the Tatsinsky honorary name (January 27, 1943).
Since March 1943, 2 guards , as part of the Voronezh Front, was preparing for the Battle of Kursk , and then participated in it. After a short rest, from September, already as part of the Western Front , he participated in autumn-winter battles to force the river. Pronya . From May 1944 until the end of the war he acted as part of the 3rd Belorussian Front .
At dawn on July 3, 1944, with a powerful attack from the east and northeast, the 2nd Guards Tank Corps broke into Minsk . The tank platoon under the command of the Guard of the Second Lieutenant D. G. Frolikov from the 4th Guards Tank Brigade, who was the first to enter Minsk, was at the forefront of the attack.
For the successful fulfillment of the command assignments during the liberation of the capital of Belarus, the city of Minsk , the corps administration, as well as the 4, 25, 26 guards tank and 4 guards motorized rifle brigades of the corps were awarded with the Order of the Red Banner (4th Guards Tank the brigade was awarded the honorary name Minsk ).
He took an active part in the Insterburg-Koenigsberg operation .
On January 16, 1945, Army General Chernyakhovsky brought into battle the 2nd Guards Tatsin Tank Corps (229 tanks and self-propelled artillery mounts ) in the direction of Radchen [3] - Kraupishken . Together with the troops of the right flank of the 5th Army , the 2nd Guards Tank Corps, with the support of aviation, attacked enemy positions on the Gumbinnen line . Marines and tankers broke through the line and took possession of the strong strongholds of Kussen and Radchen. [4] But this success came at the cost of serious losses to the tank corps - about 30 tanks remained on the battlefield.
