Military Historical Commissions ( VIC ) are temporary bodies in the Russian Armed Forces of the imperial period to study the experience of waging wars in a given period.
VICs were created in Russia to study, summarize and compile the official history of wars and issue recommendations for further improvement of the armed forces .

Military History Commission for the Description of the Russian-Turkish War
It was created in 1879 at the General Staff . In 1886, the compilation of a description of the war in the Caucasian Theater was transferred to the military-historical department of the headquarters of the Caucasian military district . In 1897, 3 volumes were prepared for publication, but Minister of War P.S. Vannovsky rejected the manuscript because of the criticism contained in it against the Russian command. In 1911, the Military Historical Commission completed its work and was liquidated.
In total for 1898-1913 were published:
- "Description of the Russian-Turkish war of 1877-1878 on the Balkan Peninsula", 1901-16, in 9 vols. (14 books, about 400 printed pages) with an atlas;
- βSpecial Additionβ (v. 1-6, 1899-1911; diplomatic documents, correspondence of the emperor with the commander in chief and general E.I. Totleben , classified materials on the war plan, reports of military agents ), not subject to publication.
Military Historical Commission for the Description of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905
It was created in 1906 under the General Directorate of the General Staff . Major General V.I. Gurko, a participant in the war, was appointed its chairman. The commission included: Colonels Rerberg F.P., Ilinsky S.P., Minutes V.N., Khvostov A.M., Adaridi K.M. , Simansky P.N., Grulev M.V. , Sivers N N., engineer-colonel Schwartz A.V. , Baron N.A. Korf - head of the cartographic section and Colonel K.K. Agafonov - head of office management, archiving and printing.
By the beginning of 1910, the work was completed, and during 1910 the Russian-Japanese War of 1904-1905 was published in 9 volumes and with an atlas:

Historical Commission for the Description of the Fleet in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905
It was created in 1908 at the naval General Staff . Commission editions:

World War I Military History Commission
At the military-historical part (later as part of the military-historical department) of the General Staff . It was established by order of the Peopleβs Commissariat of War No. 688, dated August 13, 1918 (from November 15, 1918 it was called the Commission for the Study and Use of the Experience of the War of 1914-18 , then the Military Historical Commission); disbanded on May 29, 1921 .
The chairmen of the commission were V.N. Klembovsky (August - October 1918) and A.A. Svechin (since November 1918). 39 works on the First World War and 13 on the Civil War were prepared, 44 works were published. On their basis, the Strategic Outline of the War of 1914-1918 was published (vols. 1β7, 1920β23). The work provides many operational documents and provides a factual description of the war on the Russian front.
