He came from the famous Rhine noble family of Walpot von Bassenheim , named after the property of Waldmannshausen ( German Waldmannshausen ), currently located in the community of Elbtal near Hadamar and Bessenheim . Due to a lack of information on the history of the order during this period, the biography of Heinrich Walpot is based mainly on historical theories rather than on solid facts.
According to one version, Heinrich Walpot and the preceptor of the Teutonic hospital, Heinrich, who was under the leadership from 1196 to 1198 , are one and the same person. One way or another, but with the name of Heinrich Walpot, the birth in Europe of a new force is connected - the chivalrous Teutonic Order . In 1199 , he received from the Grand Master of the Knights Templar Gilbert Eral a copy of the Charter of the Knights Templar. The charter of the Teutonic Order was largely based on this document. In addition, Henry Walpot received the support of Pope Innocent III .
Heinrich Walpot von Bassenheim died in 1200 and was buried in Acre .
