He studied under Johan Halvorsen , then in London and Berlin ; during the Berlin period ( 1920 ) conducted the premiere of the First Symphony of Harald Severud . In 1922 - 1925 conductor of the Bergen Theater "National Stage", in 1926 - 1931 played the viola in the orchestra of the Harmony Music Society (the future Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra ). In 1931 - 1934 Chief Conductor of the Gavle Symphony Orchestra .
Composer and conductor Jon Fernström writes about the eccentric style of Movinkel’s work in his memoirs. So, to revitalize the musical life in Gavle, Movinkel forced the orchestra musicians at the beginning of the concert to depict snoring, their heads resting on their music stands, so that then, “waking up”, they would perform “Morning” by Edward Grieg ; having composed the concert program half of the works of black composers, Movinkel conducted this part of the program with the help of a black conductor , etc. At the same time, notes Fernstrom, Movinkel was a good musician, but he believed that the public needed scandals to popularize music [1] .
