Biography
He began his coaching career in 1975 , becoming the head coach in the team of Elmira College at the time when he received a master's degree in education. Under his leadership, the club won the title of Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference three times and twice reached the final of the NCAA Division III .
In 1981, he worked as an assistant to the head coach of the US national team in the Canada Cup.
In 1981-1984 he worked in Sweden, in 1984-1986 in Norway, including with the national teams of these countries.
From March 1986 to the end of the 1988/89 season, he was Assistant Head Coach at Buffalo Sabers .
Season 1989-90 - work in Italy with the club “Allege” and the national team.
From the 1990/91 season to 1992/93, he was the assistant coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins .
From July 28, 1993 until the end of the 2004-05 season, he was Assistant Head Coach to the Detroit Red Wings . In parallel, in the 1996-97 season he worked at the Swedish club Malmö . In 1996, at the World Cup and at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, he worked as an assistant head coach of the Swedish national team.
From August 8, 2005 to April 2007 - assistant to the head coach of Phoenix Coyotes .
Five-time Stanley Cup winner as assistant coach for the Detroit Red Wings (1997, 1998, 2002) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (1991, 1992).
From April 10, 2007 to March 2010, he was the head coach of the SKA St. Petersburg hockey club.
Since 2010, Barry Smith began working in the NHL club “ Chicago Blackhawks ”: first as an adviser and scout, and later director of player development [1] .

As an assistant coach, he won the Stanley Cup five times:
