The city is located 120 km north of London , on the Nin River. The population exceeds 180 thousand people.
History
From Peterborough comes the name of the archaeological culture of Peterborough - hunters and gatherers, for a long time coexisted in England with more advanced farmers who came from continental Europe. Not far from Peterborough is the archaeological site of Flag Fen - a well-preserved wooden building of the 10th century. BC e.
The city is located in the swampy area of The Fens , which has been systematically drained since the 17th century. It grew strongly during the era of the industrial revolution due to the fact that the railway from London to Edinburgh passed through it. This is associated with the location in the district of large storage facilities and enterprises for the production of building materials.

The unitary unit of Peterborough covers an area of 343 km² and borders on the east and south with the non-metropolitan county of Cambridgeshire , in the southwest with the ceremonial county of Northamptonshire , in the north with the ceremonial county of Lincolnshire .
