Club career

At the club level, Simeone's main successes have been related to playing for Spanish and Italian clubs. As part of the Atletico Madrid, Diego won the championship and the Spanish Cup in the 1995/96 season (while the Argentinean, who was not very successful, scored a record 12 goals for himself in 37 games).

After three seasons at Atlético Simeon in 1997 moved to Inter Milan, where he spent two seasons (victory in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup). In 1999, the Argentine moved to Lazio. As part of the Roman club in the 1999/00 season, Diego made a “golden double”, winning the championship and the cup (in the championship Simeone played 30 matches, scoring twice).

In 2003, Diego returned to Atletico Madrid, where he spent two seasons, and then moved to the Argentine club for the first time since 1990, after spending two seasons of Racing. There, in Racing, 36-year-old Simeone began his coaching career in 2006.

During the match for the Super Bowl of Spain against Real Madrid, he gave a slap to the chief referee, for which he was disqualified for 8 matches [4] .

Career Team

He made his debut in the national team in 1988 at the age of 18.

In 1991 and 1993, he won the America’s Cup as a member of the national team, and in 1996 he won the silver medal of the Atlanta Olympic Games (Diego was one of three players over 23 years old as part of the Argentines).

Simeone was part of the Argentine national team at the 1994, 1998 and 2002 World Championships. It was after the 2002 World Cup that Simeone ended his career in the national team, having held 106 matches (11 goals) that were record-breaking for that time. However, in 2007, Simeone's figure for matches played for the Argentine national team was exceeded by his former teammates Roberto Ayala (eventually played 115 matches) and Javier Zanetti (145 matches).

In the 1/8 finals of the 1998 World Cup between the national teams of Argentina and England (2: 2), Diego Simeone provoked David Beckham and received a blow in response. For this violation, Beckham received a red card and was deleted, and Simeone got off with a yellow card for provocation arranged [5] .

Coaching career

April 15, 2009 Simeone was appointed head coach of the club “ San Lorenzo ” [6] [7] . On April 4, 2010 , after 7 losses in his last 12 games, Simeone resigned [8] .

January 19, 2011 appointed head coach of the Italian club " Catania ". The contract was signed until June 30, 2012 [9] . On June 1, 2011, Diego resigned as head coach of the Italian club [10] [11] .

June 17, 2011 Simeone headed the club " Racing " ( Avellaneda ) [12] . With the team, Diego won silver medals in the Argentina Championship. On December 20, 2011, he resigned from his post [13] .

On December 23, 2011, he was appointed head coach of the Spanish club Atletico Madrid instead of Gregorio Manzano [14] [15] [16], who had been fired the day before. In the first season, Simeone managed to win the Europa League with the team, defeating another Spanish club Athletic Bilbao in the final with a 3-0 score.

On May 17, 2013, Atletico Madrid, under the leadership of Simeone, won the Real Madrid Madrid 2–1 in the final of the King’s Cup . Prior to this, Atlético could not beat Real Madrid for 14 years, and exactly one year later the mattresses, tied with Barcelona , won the Spanish Championship for the 10th time in the history of the club. In the same year, “Atletico” for the second time in history reached the Champions League final , where Real Madrid became his rival. Wards Simeone until the last entered the score 1-0, but missed the goal in extra time, and in overtime the opponents managed to turn the tide of the game and score three goals, depriving Atlético of the trophy.
