Spanish chess player and chess theorist, one of the first masters of modern chess. Born around 1540. Priest from the city of Safra ( Extremadura ). The author of the Book on the Ingenuity and the Art of Chess ( 1561 ), which reflected the rapid development of chess theory in the middle of the 16th century , mainly opens up more widely and fully in comparison with Damiano’s popular textbook; the book has been reprinted several times, translated into German, French and Portuguese.

The Spanish party in Spanish and English sources is called Rui Lopez's debut (defense) (since Lopez tried to prove that after 1.е4 e5 2.Кf3 move 2. ... Nc6 is not favorable for Black because of the answer 3.Сb5 , therefore it should be 2.Кf3 play 2. ... d6 ). The author of the Lambes countergambit in the royal gambit . In 1560, in Rome, he played with strong Italian chess players, including Giovanni Leonardo ; beat all rivals. In the Madrid tournament of 1575, he participated with another Spanish chess player, Alfonso Seron . Both lost their games to Giovanni Leonardo and Paolo Fights .

The Italian artist Luigi Mussini portrayed Rui Lopez de Segur in the painting “Chess Tournament at the Court of the King of Spain” (1883).

In 1976, a “chess” postage stamp dedicated to the memory of Ruy Lopez was published in Cuba . The stamp shows the portrait of a chess player and the starting position of the Spanish party - the debut, which in Spanish and English traditions is often called the “beginning of Ruy Lopez”.
