Biography
Elizabeth, who was called Erzsi in the family, lost her father at the age of five, who was found dead with her mistress. After this, the girl was taken to her by her grandfather, Emperor Franz Joseph I. Elizabeth was his beloved granddaughter. In 1900, her mother Stefania married the Hungarian Count Elemer Nagy-Lonyai, after which she practically did not contact her daughter.
There were rumors that the pretender to the Belgian throne, Prince Albert wanted to marry Elizabeth, but King Leopold II, angry with his daughter Stephanie because of her marriage, advised him to do this. Elizabeth married on January 23, 1902 . Her husband, Prince Otto zu Windischgrets ( 1873 - 1952 ) was lower than the Archduke in status, which led the girl to break with the imperial house. Four children were born in the marriage:
- Franz Joseph Windischgrets ( 1904 - 1981 ),
- Ernest Windischgrets ( 1905 - 1952 ),
- Rudolph Windischgrets ( 1907 - 1939 )
- Stephanie Windischgrets ( 1909 - 2005 ).
After the fall of the monarchy in 1918, the couple divorced. The official divorce was issued in 1948 . Elizabeth Maria (with the establishment of the republic she lost all her titles) in 1921 met the Social Democrat Professor Leopold Petznek ( 1881 - 1956 ). They only got married in 1948, when she got a divorce.
In 1925, she joined the Austrian Social Democratic Party . Among party comrades, she became known as the "Red Archduke." Elizabeth was fond of spiritualism and recorded sessions in her diary. The granddaughter of the king and the emperor died at the age of 80 on March 16, 1963 . According to her testament, she was buried in an unmarked grave in the Vienna Hütteldorf cemetery.
