Biography and Chess Activities

The author of Essai sur le jeu des echecs (“Experience in a chess game, containing rules on how to play well and achieve profit through subtle moves that can be called the secrets of this game”), 1737, where he cited 100 positions of task or study type, in which winning is achieved through spectacular combinations with victims or subtle sketching maneuvers.

In the 1720s he moved to London, where he entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as an interpreter of Oriental languages. He published in English the 2nd revised edition of his book ( 1745 ) entitled “The Noble Game of Chess,” where he modified and replaced a number of tasks, added 74 opening options, including defense against the then-popular Cunningham gambit in England. The book of Stamma was repeatedly reprinted, was translated into German, Dutch and Italian. Stamma raised interest among Europeans in tasks and studies. He composed his chess compositions, guided by the canons of satranja , thereby establishing a kind of connection between old and new chess. As in the mansubas, Stamma’s positions resemble those of practical parties, and the white king, who needs to mate the enemy king (or win the game), is himself in a hopeless position.

He played a match in London (1747) out of 10 games with the young F. Filidor , who played all games black and considered himself a draw as a loss (+2 −8).

The name Stamma is associated with the invention of algebraic notation , subsequently improved by M. Hirschel ( 1784 ).
