Activities in Nazi Germany
Herman Wirth's Theory
In the 1920s Herman Wirth communicates closely with representatives of pro-Nazi circles of the German Weimar Republic. In 1925 he joined the NSDAP (party ticket No. 20.151), however, the next year he left it, a little later joined the Marxist party societies, but then, in 1926 [5] , he returned to the ranks of the National Socialists [6] .
During these years, Wirth published several works, some of which were not recognized by the scientific community (in particular, he sought to substantiate the authenticity of the Frisian chronicle, which spoke of the death of Atlantis - the so-called “ Chronicles of Ura-Lind ”). Moreover, as noted by the politician, political scientist and researcher of Wirth’s work, Alexander Dugin
Herman Wirth [6] did not share the numerous prejudices of the occultists, who hastily discredit serious studies
Russian historian A. V. Vasilchenko notes that [7] ,
unlike many publicists of that time who were in the Völkish camp, Wirth tried to ensure that his theories had sufficient scientific justification. However, now his system of evidence may seem more than doubtful.
Herman Wirth’s theory was an assumption of the polar, Nordic origin of humanity. In the north of the Earth in ancient times was the continent of Arctogeus, which was inhabited by superhuman Hyperboreans. Here civilization appeared, a kind of monotheistic prareligion , proto-language and other sources of world culture, subsequently subjected to desacralization, distortion and distortion. According to Wirth’s theory, the cause of these destructive processes was the racial mixture of Hyperboreans with the beast-like, underdeveloped representatives of the lower southern race, who inhabited another continent - Gondwana . Due to the cooling and deterioration of the climate, the northern superrace began to move south, where it was mixed. Those representatives of the super race who remained in Arktogey for the greatest amount of time gave rise to the Nordic race in the understanding of Wirth's contemporaries during the Mesolithic and Neolithic period [6] .
According to Herman Virtu [8] ,
All modern languages and religious teachings are the dead plexus of more obscure symbols and signs, the key to which is irretrievably lost along with the polar earth and the polar race
Wirth’s work received a lively response in Völkish circles, and in 1932 the Mecklenburg government organized for Wirth a “Research Institute for the Prehistory of the Spirit” (Forschungsinstitut für Geistesurgeschichte) in Bad Doberan . In 1934, Wirth was restored to the NSDAP and joined the SS (membership number 258.776). Hitler spoke approvingly of a number of Wirth’s works, in particular, “Signs and Soul of the Swastika” of 1933, but also stated [7] :
These professors and obscurantists who create their own Nordic religion spoil everything for me. Why am I admitting this? They make a mess. And every confusion is fruitful. ”
Anenerbe Period
In 1935 he became one of the founders and the first director of the Anenerbe Society (he headed it until 1937 ). In 1938, due to ideological disagreements with Himmler, who, in particular, did not share Wirth’s theories regarding matriarchy in German society (Das Mutterrecht), was dismissed from Anenerbe , while remaining a voluntary assistant to society until 1945 [9] . After Wirth, Anenerbe was led by Walter Wüst ( German: Walter Wüst ).
After the war
In 1945-1947 was interned by American troops, then left for Sweden, but in 1954 he returned to Marburg, where he led the private life of a scientist. Wirth’s ideas about the origin of America’s autochthonous population in the 1970s resonated unexpectedly from the North American Indians . Willy Brandt visited Wirth in 1979, and the government of Rhineland-Palatinate suggested that the scientist create a museum for his ethnographic collection [10] .
