History
The conference (group) “Sisters of Mercy”, established in 1928 by the Salesian father Antonio Cavoli, together with the part of the “Conference of St. Vincenta, "was engaged in the" Garden of Mercy "- a shelter for the elderly and orphans in Miyazaki. On the advice of don Vincenzo Cimatti, the group was transformed into the Congregation on August 15, 1937.
On August 8, 1939, Don Vincenzo Chimatti, the apostolic prefect of Miyazaki, canonically established the Congregation of diocesan law.
In 1939, the first nuns who brought vows already existed.
During World War II, the congregation was experiencing, like all of Japan, crisis and poverty. At the end of the war, the congregation opens its branches in Korea , Latin America and Europe , continuing to engage in orphans and old people.
In 1948, the first Charter was approved; the latter, updated according to the rules of the Salesian family, was approved in September 1985.
From January 24, 1986, the Congregation becomes a member of the Salesian family.
In January 1998, the Congregation becomes the Congregation of Papal Law.
Present
According to 2008 data, the congregation has more than 1000 nuns (approximately 500 sisters from Japan, 500 from Korea and other countries of the world) who work in 11 countries.
Mission
The purpose of the existence of the congregation is to care for the sick and suffering, orphans, to bring up and educate children, to care for needy families and the elderly, for evangelism.
The motto of the congregation is “Blessed are the merciful” (Matthew 5.7) and “Go, teach all nations” (Matthew 28.19)
Congregation and Salesian Family
Since the Sisters of Mercy are members of the Salesian family, the general rector of the main congregation in this family - the Congregation of Salesians - is its inspiration and center of unity.
The Congregation conducts the mission of Don Bosco in the Church, taking into account the time and place of activity. The Institute actively collaborates with other groups of the Salesian family, especially Salesian staff .
Organization
The Congregation is accepted after a period of familiarization at the end of 2 years of novitiate.
