Biography
Totem tradesman.
In 1787 he reached Irkutsk. On May 20, 1790, he signed a contract with the Kargopol merchant A. A. Baranov , who lived in Irkutsk , on a sea expedition to the American shores in the possession of the North-Eastern company of Golikov and Shelikhov .
Since 1790, Baranov became the manager of all overseas territories of the Northeast Company. The company conducted trade, took measures to secure open lands for Russia.
Kuskov remained for the ruler on the island of Kodiak ( 1796 and 1800 ), in Novoarkhangelsk ( 1806 - 1808 ), was the head of the Konstantinovsky fortress in Nuchek ( 1798 - 1799 ), managed the Russian settlement in the Yakutat Bay ( 1802 - 1803 ), led expeditions from Yakutat Bay to the Sith Island ( 1801 - 1802 ).
Fort Ross
According to the plan of Rezanov and Baranov, on August 30, 1812 in California , north of the San Francisco Bay , 18 miles (24 miles kilometers) north of the Bodega Bay , the Russian fortress Fort Ross was founded.
Kuskov was appointed commandant of the fortress (until the end of 1821 ). Gardens were established in the colony, cattle breeding was developed, and there was a shipyard. An agreement was drawn up between the company representative and the leaders of the Indian tribes (legally secured the transfer of Russian possessions in California to the ownership of the Russian-American company ).
Retirement
In 1821, I. A. Kuskov retired and returned to Totma on July 4, 1823 .
He was buried in the territory of the Spaso-Sumorinsky monastery . The exact location has not been established; at the site of the alleged burial there is a wooden cross and an anchor.
Rewards
- In 1805, Kuskov received the gold medal "For Zeal" on the Vladimir tape .
- October 12, 1806 awarded the title of Commerce Advisor .
Memory
- The house museum was opened in 1990 in Totma.
- The embankment of the Sukhon River in Totma is named after Kuskov. [one]
- In the reconstructed Fort Ross, there is a restored Kuskov apartment building, in which he lived and worked during his reign as a settlement [2] .
