Geography

The province of Perugia is located in the central part of the state and occupies the northern and central part of Umbria . The Tiber River runs along Perugia. Grapes and olives grow in this area. Here is the largest lake in central Italy, Lake Trasimen , on which there are three islands - Palvese, Maggiore and Minore. The lake in circumference is about 30 miles, but quite shallow.

History

Perugia was founded by the Etruscans in the VI century BC. According to 1840, Perugia supplied more than half of the meat that was consumed in Rome. Among the papal provinces of Perugia was 4th in importance. In 1860 it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy as the province of Umbria. In 1921, the province was divided into two - Terni and Perugia [1] .

 
 

Population

According to estimates for 2008, about 660,000 people live in the Perugia region. The population density is about 100 people / km². However, it is much higher near the Tiber River valley, while in the mountainous regions it is much lower.

In addition to the Italian population, a large number of immigrants from all over the world live in the area.

Municipalities and settlements

There are 59 municipalities in the Perugia area.

The main city of the district is Perugia (165,000 people) in the central part of the district. The second largest and largest is the city of Foligno (57,000 people) in the east of the area.

Tourist Attractions

The province has medieval castles and fortresses. Among the most famous are the Maggiore fountain, the National Gallery of Umbria, the temple of Minerva, which dates back to the 1st century BC, the cathedrals of San Lorenzo and San Bernardino, the basilica of Santa Maria del Angelo and Saint Clair, the bell tower of St. . Petra, the Franciscan Way of Peace (the path traveled by St. Francis in 1206 connects Assisi and Gubbio ) [2] . The Basilica of San Domenico houses works and statues of artists of Perugia.
