Story

A philistinely boring and very ordinary couple - Janet Weiss and Brad Major - after their engagement, goes to visit the old professor whom Brad had once studied with. On the road, their car breaks down. A case leads them to a nearby ancient castle. Hoping to find the phone, they knock on the door and ask for help. The inhabitants of the castle invite them inside, and the heroes unexpectedly find themselves in a society of people who at first seem only strange and slightly eccentric, but as events unfold, they turn out to be absolutely crazy and breathtakingly crazy in their shocking extravagance.

However, even their extravagance can not be compared with the reckless genius of the owner of the castle - Dr. Frank En Ferter - who turns out to be a crazy transvestite scientist from the distant planet of Transgender in the galaxy Transylvania. It turns out that Dr. Frank for a long time tried to unravel the secret of life, and shortly before the arrival of the couple, he finally managed to do it. With the help of this discovery, the scientist creates for himself an attractive young guy and turns him into his sexual slave. Janet and Brad go to the gala evening dedicated to this event. The couple is absolutely shocked by what they saw and heard. Their boring world of philistine ordinaryness and traditional taboos sharply runs into a diametrically opposite extreme.

Artistic Features

The picture acquired over time the status of a " cult film ." According to the film critic M. Trofimenkov : “At the beginning, the film failed at the box office: it did not acquire cult status immediately, in a way unknown to science” [3] .

According to the Umberto Eco hypothesis, one of the factors contributing to the formation of a cult status around a particular work is the “incoherence”, or “clarity” of this work. As an example, he cites the film " Casablanca ", which "can be perceived in parts, grabbing pieces, each of which becomes a quote, an archetype ." In his opinion: “To a certain extent, the same can be said about the Rocky Horror Horror Show, which is a cult film in its purest form precisely because it is formless - it can be disassembled into quotes, breaking the connection between the pieces, to infinity” [4] .

Recognition

  • In 2005, it was included in the National Register of Films of the Library of Congress .
  • In 1980, he was inducted into the Saturn Prize Hall of Fame.
