History

The ancient, originally Etruscan , then Ligurian city of Lucca was conquered by the Romans in 177 BC. e. Since then, he was part of Cisalpine Gaul . After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lucca was alternately under the rule of the Goths, Longbards and Franks, later it was the main city of the county of Tucia , then a free city. During the struggle between the Guelphs and Ghibellines , the former prevailed in Lucca. She conducted lively trade with the East and significantly enriched herself during the Crusades. After a short period of submission to Pisa, the Republic of Lucca turned to the duchy, in which Castruccio Castracani seized power (1327). After his death (1328), Lucca obeyed either Genoa, then Parma, then Verona, or Florence. Freed in 1370 with the help of Charles IV , she turned to the aristocratic republic.

In 1799, it was conquered by the French. In 1805, Napoleon, combining it with Piombino and several other neighboring cities, converted it to a principality and gave it to his sister Elise and her husband Bachiokki . After the Presburg Peace , Massa and Carrara were annexed to the Principality. The Bachiokka administration left good memories in Lucca: under it, the Napoleonic Code was introduced, new roads were founded, many schools were founded, etc. At the Vienna Congress , it was decided to give Charles II to Lucco-Ferdinand of Bourbon , Spanish Infant, formerly (1803-1807 ) king of Etruria. Due to his infancy, the first time was actually ruled by his mother, Maria Louise , daughter of Charles IV of Spain . The popular hatred that Karl had incurred upon himself as a despotic control system forced him to cede Lucca to Tuscany when he (1847) became heir to Maria Louise, Duchess of Parma .
