Geography
In the north, the province borders with the Swiss cantons of Ticino and Graubunden , in the east - with the Italian provinces of Sondrio and Lecco , the province of Monza e Brianza in the south and the province of Varese in the west. The capital is the city of Como . Other large settlements with a population of more than 10 thousand inhabitants are Cantu , Erba , Mariano Comense and Oldjate Comasco . Also included in the province is the Swiss enclave of Campione d'Italia, canton of Ticino.
The borders of the province used to be wider and until 1927 it also included the northern part of the province of Varese (changed in 1927 by decree No. 1) and almost the entire territory of the province of Lecco, which was separated into a separate administrative unit by decree No. 250 of March 6, 1992, of the president of Italy.
As of December 31, 2011, the population of the main communes was:

History
2006 discoveries indicate the presence of Neanderthals in the province about 50,000-60,000 years ago [3] , traces of their stay were found in the Bear Grotto (Grotta dell'Orso) near the village of Erbonne, which is located in the commune of San Fedele Intelvi .
Other artifacts found in the grotto of Buco del piombo near the town of Erba are attributed to the Mousterian culture of the Paleolithic era. This grotto was inhabited by people, albeit intermittently, from 30,000 to 10,000 years ago. Silicon tips found in the Tanun area on the slopes near Cosia are also related to this period. These findings confirm the presence of people who first engaged in gathering, and subsequently moved from the plains to the pre-alpine slopes and hunted large herds of herbivores.
