On the sides of the pedestal there were installed bronze cast boards with the inscriptions: “To the centenary of the Kolyvano-Voskresensky factories that took place during the reign of Emperor Alexander I in the summer of 1825 ”, “The Kolyvano-Voskresensky factories were founded by state adviser A. N. Demidov in 1725. They came into the ownership of the Imperial Majesty in the reign of Empress Elizabeth in 1747. " A cast-iron oval bas-relief with a portrait of A. N. Demidov was cast for a pedestal at the Guryev factory. The model T-34-85 tank was installed in 1995 in front of the Mir cinema in honor of the 50th anniversary of Victory Day . In addition, the monument quite organically fit into the composition of Victory Square with its Memorial of Glory (see above ) and the boulevard of the defenders of Stalingrad .

Demolished Monuments

Monument to I. V. Stalin in Stalin Square. Destroyed in 1956

Monuments to I.V. Stalin

  • Monument on October Square - in 1937, an architectural ensemble was formed on the Lenin Avenue from the BMK recreation center and school No. 25. A sculpture by Joseph Stalin was installed in the center, and the square between the buildings was named after the leader. [17] In 1956, the monument was dismantled and a sculpture of V. I. Lenin was installed in its place.
  • The monument in front of the Rodina cinema was erected in 1941 and demolished in the 1950s.
  • Monument in the park of the Melange Plant - On May 15, 1953, the Barnaul City Council renamed the park of the Melange Plant into the Joseph Stalin Park and erected a monument to it on the central avenue. In 1956, the former name was returned, and the sculpture was dismantled. Today, the city's communists are trying to raise money for the restoration and search of this statue - according to them, the monument was buried in the park [18] [19] .
  • The monument on Freedom Square - was erected in the 1930s and depicted V.I. Lenin and I.V. Stalin sitting on a bench, hugging a pioneer in a fatherly way. In 1956, the sculpture was dismantled and moved to the basement of the school, located in the neighborhood. The dilapidated monument was discovered by builders in 2003 and thrown into a landfill. [20] [21]
  • Monument in front of the BMK building - erected in the early 1930s immediately after the construction of the Barnaul melange plant . Torn down in the second 1950s.
  • Monument in front of Transmash recreation center - built in a small area in front of the factory club in the late 1940s. After the death of the leader in 1953 and the 20th Congress in 1956, a statue of V.I. Lenin was erected at this place.

Monuments to S. M. Kirov

In the 1930s, two monuments to S. Kirov were erected in the park of the Oktyabrsky district and at the intersection of Lenin Avenue and Leo Tolstoy Street . However, they were later dismantled.

Monuments to V.I. Lenin

Monument to V.I. Lenin on October Square in 2008
  • Monument in the courtyard of gymnasium No. 45 (Union Street of the Republics, 36) - a statue of Lenin was demolished in the mid-1990s.
  • The monument in the village of Central - a monument erected near the village school, depicted the young Vladimir Ulyanov reading a book. In 2004, the sculpture was stolen. [22]
  • Monument in front of the Transmash recreation center building - erected in the early 1950s instead of the Stalin sculpture that stood here before. The statue of Lenin depicted the leader in the orator's pose and was close to the monument on October Square by compositional decision and general plan. [23] Dismantled in the late 1950s.
  • Monument on October Square - in 1937 a monument to I.V. Stalin was located on this place (see above ), but in 1956 it was dismantled and a sculpture of V.I. Lenin was installed instead, and all inscriptions were completely removed from the pedestal . This sculpture became the ideological, but not the architectural and plastic dominant of the surrounding territory. As conceived by the authors, the hand of the statue was supposed to point forward, however, due to the layout of the square, this direction did not coincide with the plan (tracing of the main street of the city - Lenin Avenue ). The hand pointed to the Deli under the Spire . According to some versions of [24] [25] , this served as an occasion for numerous jokes among the Barnaul people, and it was decided to lower the arm to the level of the chest. The monument was dismantled in June 2012 as part of the reconstruction of the Art Museum of the Altai Territory [26] and moved to the territory of the Barnaul Reinforced Concrete Products Plant No. 2 [27] .
  • Monument in the Upland Park - was located on the central site of the former VDNH . At the moment, the monument has been dismantled, in its place the Orthodox Church of John the Baptist was built [28] .

Japanese POW Monument

In 1996, barnaul entrepreneurs erected a monument on the site of the former cemetery of Japanese prisoners of war in the Jubilee Park . The authors of the sketches and layout were artist V. Polukarov and sculptor N. Zvonkov. It consisted of three stelae, captured by a ring, meaning people torn from bondage. The Buddha at the foot of the memorial guarded the peace of the dead, and the mournful bells were supposed to remind the living of the past. But gradually many elements of the monument made of bronze were stolen. [29]

Monument Preservation Problem

After the collapse of the USSR, the problem of the preservation of monuments in Barnaul became quite relevant. Of the entire list of monuments, only the Demidov pillar has the status of a monument of federal significance. [30] The most valuable from a historical and artistic point of view, monuments, busts and statues (mainly devoted to military and revolutionary subjects) were transferred to the balance of the municipality. [31] In 2006, the Altai Territory Administration issued a decree that defines the rules for installing equipment and designing territories around historical and cultural monuments. For example, it is forbidden to place stationary equipment; fastening equipment to monuments; damage to the paved surface; use of pyrotechnic means near monuments [32] . Less significant monuments were given under patronage to the various organizations near which they are located.

Nevertheless, in the city there are frequent cases of vandalism [33] [34] [35] [36] - the theft of parts of monuments, the destruction or damage of monuments, fences. The statues of the virgin lands, Pushkin, the bust of Yadrintsev, the Memorial of Glory, small sculptural forms - the swan “Andryusha”, “Apple Tree”, “Open Book”, and the sculptural group “Filming a Movie” were repeatedly exposed to this.

Monuments of Barnaul as excursion objects

Monuments of the city are often used as sightseeing objects. In particular, there are routes for schoolchildren (sightseeing, History of Barnaul , Barnaul during the war), during which children are introduced to such monuments as the Memorial of Glory, the Demidov Pillar , the monuments of the Nagorny Cemetery , statues and busts of Pushkin, Polzunov, Frolov [37] .

Such excursions are often conducted by the State Museum of the History of Literature, Art and Culture of Altai and the Altai State Museum of Local Lore , as well as local travel agencies for Barnaul residents and city guests.
