Geography
History
Mention of the Duchy of Benevento begins in the 2nd half of the 6th century. In the middle of the VIII century, Benevento became a principality. In 1051 he recognized the authority of Pope Leo IX , from 1077 to 1860 he was part of the papal possession. In 1860 it became part of the Sardinian kingdom .
On February 26, 1266, a battle occurred at Benevento, after which Charles I of Anjou became king of Sicily and Naples .
In 1877, the armed rebellion of the Bakuninists was crushed.
